## Summary

Click depth is the number of links a visitor or crawler has to follow from the homepage to reach a page. Pages that sit many clicks deep get fewer internal links pointing at them and are slower for crawlers to find, so a common rule of thumb is to keep important pages within three clicks.

We measured how often sites break that rule. Of 175,560 crawled HTML pages on 293 ranking sites, 10.5% are four or more clicks from the homepage. WordPress sites bury the most pages, and where we could crawl a site completely, the share of deep pages was higher still.

## What we measured

We crawled 293 ranking sites, up to 1,000 pages each: 100 stores, 95 WordPress sites and 98 business sites, 195,708 URLs in total. Each crawl started at the homepage, which counts as depth zero, and recorded how many clicks it took to reach every HTML page.

Depth is measured within the first 1,000 pages crawled on each site, which understates depth on large sites. 148 sites were small enough to crawl completely, and those give the more complete view of how deep pages really sit.

## One in ten pages sits four or more clicks deep

10.5% of the 175,560 crawled HTML pages (18,446) are four or more clicks from the homepage. Most pages sit much closer: 57.2% (100,406) are two clicks deep, and 18.0% are three clicks deep.

Only 14.2% of crawled pages are one click from the homepage. At the far end, 3.3% of pages are six or more clicks deep.

The problem is concentrated on some sites rather than spread evenly. 30.4% of the 293 sites (89) have more than a tenth of their pages at depth 4 or deeper.

10.5%

## WordPress sites bury the most pages

WordPress sites have the deepest structure in the sample. 15.7% of 50,252 crawled WordPress pages sit four or more clicks deep, against 10.2% of 67,249 store pages and 6.4% of 58,059 business-site pages.

The same order holds at the site level. 40.0% of 95 WordPress sites have more than a tenth of their pages at depth 4 or deeper, against 29.0% of 100 stores and 22.4% of 98 business sites.

A likely reason is how blogs grow. New posts push older ones down through paginated archives, so a post that started one click from the homepage can drift several clicks deep as more content is published. Stores and business sites lean more on menus and category pages that keep the main sections close to the top.

## Complete crawls show more depth

On the 148 sites small enough to crawl completely, 21.3% of 42,284 pages are four or more clicks deep, and 43.9% of those sites cross the 10% line. On the 145 sites that hit the 1,000-page cap, only 7.1% of crawled pages are that deep.

That gap likely reflects the cap more than the sites. A capped crawl stops before it reaches the deepest pages, so the capped figure is a floor. The fully crawled sites show what depth looks like when every linked page is counted, and the overall 10.5% is likely an understatement for larger sites.

## What this means for your site

Run a crawl of your own site and sort pages by click depth. Then look at which pages sit four or more clicks deep and whether any of them matter for search or sales.

- Link important deep pages from higher up: category pages, hub pages or a related-posts block on popular content.
- On blogs, add category or topic hubs so older posts do not rely on paginated archives alone.
- Check that pagination links are plain crawlable links, so crawlers can reach the end of long lists.
- Re-crawl after changes to confirm the share of deep pages has dropped.

## Frequently asked questions

### What percentage of pages are more than three clicks from the homepage?

In our crawl of 293 ranking sites, 10.5% of 175,560 HTML pages were four or more clicks from the homepage. On the 148 sites we could crawl completely, the share was 21.3%.

### How deep are most pages on a website?

Most sit close to the top. 57.2% of crawled pages were two clicks from the homepage, 14.2% were one click away and 3.3% were six or more clicks deep.

### Do WordPress sites have deeper pages than other sites?

In this sample, yes. 15.7% of crawled WordPress pages sat four or more clicks deep, against 10.2% of store pages and 6.4% of business-site pages.

### How do I check click depth on my site?

Crawl your site starting from the homepage and sort pages by click depth. Then link any important pages at depth 4 or deeper from category pages, hubs or popular content.

Deep pages are a linking problem, and a few hub pages or related-content blocks can bring important content much closer to the homepage. Need help with this? See our technical SEO services (https://www.pagespeedmatters.com/services/technical-seo).

Click depth is measured from the crawl start at the homepage for every HTML page. Depth is measured within the first 1,000 pages crawled per site, which understates depth on large sites. Fully crawled sites are the 148 whose crawl finished before the 1,000-page cap; they are presented as the more complete view of depth, not as a separate population.
