## Key Findings

1. **252,751** homepages crawled since 1 Jan 2026 (**0.63%** of 40.3M) contain 'Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet' in their page code, and 153,524 contain 'consectetur adipiscing elit'. Copy stat
2. Across all crawled homepages, with no date limit, the phrase appears on **1.63%** of 15,270,090 WordPress homepages, **0.39%** of 1,472,362 Shopify homepages, 0.30% of 36,199 Wix homepages and 0.18% of 387,830 Squarespace homepages. Copy stat
3. WordPress accounts for **47.9%** of the 520,204 homepages with no date limit that carry the phrase. Copy stat
4. Placeholder text rarely reaches visible content on ranking sites: **36 of 38,373** top 20 ranking pages (**0.09%**, across 15,987 sites) show 'lorem ipsum' in their visible text. Copy stat
5. On those ranking pages the gap points the same way: WordPress pages show visible lorem ipsum at **0.19%** (11 of 5,831), against **0.07%** for Shopify (10 of 13,702) and 0.08% for other platforms (13 of 16,001). Copy stat
6. In HTTP Archive's Sept 2026 crawl of about 783,000 top 1M homepages, only **43** have lorem ipsum in the title or meta description, so the phrase almost always sits in hidden templates or body sections rather than search snippets. Copy stat

## Summary

'Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet' is the placeholder text designers use before the real copy is ready. It is meant to be replaced before launch. When it is left behind, it can surface in a hidden slider, a demo section or a search snippet, and it tells anyone who sees it that the site went live unfinished.

We searched for it in homepage code across 40.3M homepages, and 252,751 contain the phrase. Across all crawled homepages, with no date limit, the platform split is lopsided: it appears in the page code of 1.63% of WordPress homepages against 0.39% of Shopify homepages, so WordPress sites are 4.2x as likely to carry placeholder text. The good news is that it very rarely reaches what visitors or searchers actually see.

## What we measured

We searched homepage code for the exact phrase 'Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet' and for 'consectetur adipiscing elit', the words that usually follow it. The search covers the full homepage source, including hidden templates and scripts, so every count here means the text is in the page code, not necessarily on screen.

There are two bases, and they should be kept apart. The overall share uses homepages crawled from January 1 to October 14, 2026 (40,295,452 domains). The platform split uses a larger set: all crawled homepages, with no date limit.

To see whether placeholder text reaches visible content, we also checked the visible text of pages ranking in Google's top 20 for US searches, and the titles and meta descriptions of about 783,000 top 1M homepages in HTTP Archive's September 2026 crawl.

## Lorem ipsum sits in the code of a small share of homepages

252,751 homepages crawled since January 1, 2026, or 0.63% of 40.3M, contain 'Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet' in their page code. 153,524 contain 'consectetur adipiscing elit'.

That is a small share, but a large number of sites. Most of these homepages likely picked it up from a theme demo, a page builder template or an unused section that was hidden rather than deleted.

## WordPress sites are 4.2x as likely as Shopify stores

Across all crawled homepages, with no date limit, the phrase appears in the page code of 1.63% of 15,270,090 WordPress homepages. That compares with 0.39% of 1,472,362 Shopify homepages, 0.30% of 36,199 Wix homepages and 0.18% of 387,830 Squarespace homepages. WordPress sites are 4.2x as likely as Shopify stores to carry it.

WordPress also accounts for 47.9% of the 520,204 homepages in that larger set that carry the phrase, close to half of all of them.

The likely reason is how sites are built. Many WordPress themes and page builders ship with demo content and template sections filled with lorem ipsum, and a site owner can hide a section without removing its text.

## Placeholder text rarely reaches what visitors see

On sites that rank in Google, placeholder text almost never makes it into visible content. Only 36 of 38,373 top 20 ranking pages (0.09%, across 15,987 sites) show 'lorem ipsum' in their visible text.

On those ranking pages the platform gap points the same way. WordPress pages show visible lorem ipsum at 0.19% (11 of 5,831), against 0.07% for Shopify (10 of 13,702) and 0.08% for other platforms (13 of 16,001). The counts are tiny, so treat this as a direction rather than a precise rate.

It is even rarer in search snippets. In HTTP Archive's September 2026 crawl of about 783,000 top 1M homepages, only 43 have lorem ipsum in the title or meta description. So when the phrase is in a homepage's code, it almost always sits in a hidden template or a body section, not in what Google shows.

## What this means for your site

Search your own page source. Open your homepage, view the source, and search for 'lorem' and 'consectetur'. Then do the same for your main templates: a product or service page, a blog post and any landing pages built from a page builder template.

If you find it, delete the section rather than hiding it. Hidden sections still add markup, and sometimes images and scripts, to every page load. Check reusable blocks, global sections and theme demo pages too, since those often carry placeholder text into many pages at once.

Finally, add a placeholder check to your launch list. A quick site search for 'lorem' before any new page goes live is the simplest way to keep this off your site.

## Frequently asked questions

### How many websites still have lorem ipsum on them?

252,751 homepages crawled since January 1, 2026, or 0.63% of 40.3M, contain 'Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet' in their page code. Very few show it where visitors can see it: 36 of 38,373 ranking pages had it in visible text.

### Which platform has the most lorem ipsum placeholder text?

WordPress. The phrase is in the page code of 1.63% of WordPress homepages, against 0.39% of Shopify, 0.30% of Wix and 0.18% of Squarespace homepages. WordPress accounts for 47.9% of all homepages that carry it.

### Does lorem ipsum show up in Google search results?

Rarely. Of about 783,000 top 1M homepages in HTTP Archive's September 2026 crawl, only 43 have lorem ipsum in the title or meta description.

### How do I find placeholder text on my site?

View the source of your homepage and main templates and search for 'lorem' and 'consectetur'. Check hidden sections, reusable blocks and theme demo pages too.

Leftover placeholder sections are easy to remove, and clearing them out trims page code and keeps unfinished copy from ever reaching a visitor. Need help with this? See our website maintenance services (https://www.pagespeedmatters.com/services/website-maintenance).

## Methodology & Source

Data source

40.3M homepages crawled Jan to Oct 2026; Google top 20 pages for US searches; HTTP Archive crawl of the top 1M sites

Collection date

October 2026

Sample

40.3M homepages

Release

PageSpeed Matters, Oct 2026

Exact phrase search across homepage source code, including hidden templates and scripts, so counts mean the text is in the page code. The 0.63% uses homepages crawled Jan 1 to Oct 14, 2026 (40,295,452 domains); the platform split uses all crawled homepages with no date limit, so the two bases are kept apart. Visible-text figures come from pages in the Google top 20 for US searches; title and meta figures from HTTP Archive's Sept 2026 top 1M crawl.
