## Summary

On a phone, the first screen is the most valuable space a store has. Sticky headers, cookie notices, promo bars and popups all compete for it, and every pixel they hold is a pixel the shopper cannot use to see products.

We rendered 246 ranking store homepages at phone size and measured how much of the first screen sits under fixed or sticky elements. The median is a modest 7.1%. But 8.5% of homepages cover more than a quarter of the first screen, and 4.1% cover more than half.

## What we measured

We loaded store pages that rank in Google on a phone-sized 390x844 screen. We placed a grid of points over the first screen and counted a point as covered when the element there sits inside a fixed or sticky container.

The usable sample is small: 246 store homepages, 302 product pages and 281 category pages. Pages that were blocked or loaded without usable content are left out. Coverage includes sticky headers and cookie banners as well as popups, so these figures describe all fixed clutter, not popups alone.

## Most homepages stay clear, but a few are buried

Across 246 ranking store homepages, fixed and sticky elements cover a median 7.1% of the first phone screen. For most stores that is likely a header bar and perhaps a thin announcement strip.

The tail is where it gets expensive. 8.5% of homepages cover more than a quarter of the first screen, and 4.1% cover more than half. At that level a shopper often has to dismiss something before they can see what the store sells.

Product pages are more cluttered. Across 302 ranking product pages, the median coverage is also 7.1%, but 19.9% cover more than a quarter of the first screen, likely because sticky add-to-cart bars and chat buttons stack on top of the header. Category pages sit in between: a median 7.6% coverage, with 9.6% of 281 pages covering more than a quarter.

## Platform, vertical and rank splits are small and uneven

By platform, the share of store homepages with more than 25% covered ranges from 8.0% on Shopify (212 homepages) to 13.3% on other platforms (30 homepages). The other-platforms group is small, so treat that gap as a hint rather than a firm result.

By vertical, apparel and jewelry stores are the most likely to cover more than a quarter of the screen (10.4% of 67 homepages), against 3.8% of 52 home, kitchen and garden stores. By rank there is no steady pattern: 15.9% of homepages ranking 4 to 10 cover more than a quarter, against 9.2% at 1 to 3 and 3.6% at 11 to 20. Every one of these groups is small, and none of this shows that clutter affects rankings.

## What this means for your store

Open your homepage and a product page on a real phone, with a fresh browser so the cookie notice and any popup fire, and look at how much of the first screen is left.

- Keep the sticky header slim, and let it shrink or hide on scroll.
- Use a compact cookie notice rather than a full-screen one, where your consent rules allow it.
- Delay email popups until the shopper has scrolled or spent time on the page, and never stack one on top of the cookie notice.
- On product pages, check that a sticky add-to-cart bar, chat button and announcement bar do not all appear at once.

Google's Search guidance also warns against intrusive interstitials that block the main content on mobile.

## Frequently asked questions

### How much of the mobile screen do popups and banners cover on store homepages?

On 246 ranking store homepages rendered at phone size, fixed and sticky elements cover a median 7.1% of the first screen. 8.5% cover more than a quarter and 4.1% cover more than half. These figures include sticky headers and cookie notices as well as popups.

### Are product pages more cluttered than homepages on mobile?

Yes, in the tail. The median coverage on 302 product pages is also 7.1%, but 19.9% cover more than a quarter of the first screen, against 8.5% of homepages.

### How do I check how much of my mobile screen is covered?

Open your homepage and a product page on a phone in a fresh private window, so cookie notices and popups fire, and see how much of the first screen is left before you scroll or dismiss anything.

Clearing the first phone screen is usually a matter of a few banner and popup settings, and it gives shoppers back the space where they decide to stay. Need help with this? See our ecommerce CRO agency (https://www.pagespeedmatters.com/services/ecommerce-cro).
