## Summary
Online shoppers cannot touch a product, so the photo gallery does much of the selling. We wanted to know how many distinct product images ranking product pages actually show, and how many still rely on a single photo.
The median ranking product page with a detectable gallery shows 6 distinct product images, and 16.7% show just one. At the other end, about a quarter of galleries hold 10 or more images.
## What we measured
We rendered product pages that rank in Google on a phone-sized 390x844 screen. 302 product pages loaded with usable content; pages that were blocked or loaded without usable content are left out.
On each page we found the product gallery, then counted the unique image files inside it, outside the header and footer. Different sizes of the same image count once.
The main limit is detection. Our check found no recognisable gallery on 122 of the 302 pages, so every figure here covers the 180 pages where a gallery was detected. Stores with custom-built galleries are likely under-represented. Some groups below are small, so treat their figures as directional.
## Most galleries hold several photos
Across the 180 ranking product pages with a detected gallery, the median gallery holds 6 distinct images.
16.7% show just one image. For those products, the shopper sees a single angle and nothing else, with no detail shots, scale or product in use.
At the other end, 26.7% of galleries hold 10 or more distinct images.
## Shopify galleries are larger
By platform, the median gallery size ranges from 4 images on other platforms (33 pages) to 7 on Shopify (137 pages).
Single-image galleries follow the same pattern. 13.1% of Shopify galleries show just one image, against 24.2% on other platforms.
One possible reason is that Shopify themes make it easy to add many images and variant photos to a product, while other platforms vary more in how the gallery is set up. The other-platform group is small (33 pages), so this gap is directional.
## Verticals and ranks differ only a little
By vertical, the median gallery size ranges from 5 images in beauty and health (45 pages) to 6.5 in home, kitchen and garden (52 pages). Beauty products are often simple packaged items, while home goods may benefit more from room shots and close-ups of materials.
By rank, the median is 7 images for pages ranking 1 to 3 (31 pages) and 6 for pages ranking 4 to 10 (66 pages) and 11 to 20 (83 pages). The top-3 group is small, and a one-image difference in the median is not enough to say that larger galleries help a page rank. This is a correlation at best.
## What this means for your store
If your product pages show one image, you are in the 16.7% of detected galleries that give shoppers the least to go on. Adding photos is one of the simpler improvements to a product page.
- **Aim for the typical range.** A median of 6 images is a sensible target for most products: main shot, alternate angles, detail, scale and the product in use.
- **Show every variant.** If a product comes in colors, show a photo for each one.
- **Keep the gallery fast.** Load only the first image right away and lazy-load the rest, so extra photos do not slow the page on a phone.
- **Size images for phones.** Serve modern formats and sizes that fit the screen rather than full-resolution originals.
- **Test it.** Compare conversion rates on products before and after you expand the gallery.
