## Summary

WordPress has two kinds of themes. Classic themes build pages from PHP templates. Block themes build every part of the page, including the header and footer, from blocks that site owners edit in the Site Editor. Which kind a site runs changes how it is edited, maintained and moved to a new theme later.

We counted how many WordPress homepages carry block-theme markup in their page code. The answer is about a third: 32.0% of 8,802,973 WordPress homepages, or 2,816,450 sites.

## What we measured

We searched the page code of 40,295,452 homepages crawled from 1 Jan to 14 Oct 2026.

A homepage counts as WordPress when its code contains "wp-content". It counts as using block-theme markup when its code also contains the wp-site-blocks wrapper, the container block themes output around the page.

This is a single count, and it has limits. The search covers the full page source, including hidden templates and scripts, so we report it as markup found in the page code rather than a confirmed theme type for every site. We could not confirm the figure in a second dataset. We also do not break it down by site size or platform, and one snapshot says nothing about a trend.

## About a third of WordPress homepages carry block-theme markup

Of the 8,802,973 WordPress homepages in the sample, 2,816,450 (32.0%) have the wp-site-blocks wrapper in their page code. The rest show no sign of it, which suggests most WordPress homepages still run a classic theme.

That fits how WordPress sites usually change: a theme tends to stay in place until the site is redesigned or rebuilt, so a site built on a classic theme or a page builder is likely to keep it until then.

## What this means for your site

Check which kind of theme you run. In the WordPress admin, a block theme shows Editor under Appearance; a classic theme shows Customize and Widgets instead. You can also view your homepage source and search for wp-site-blocks.

- If you run a classic theme, there is no need to switch for its own sake. Keep the theme and its plugins updated, and plan the move to blocks as part of your next redesign.
- If you run a block theme, keep your template and pattern edits documented, because changes made in the Site Editor are stored in the database rather than in theme files.
- Before switching theme types, test on a staging copy first. Headers, footers and widget areas are built differently, and they are the parts most likely to break.

## Frequently asked questions

### What percentage of WordPress sites use a block theme?

Across homepages crawled in 2026, 32.0% of WordPress homepages (2,816,450 of 8,802,973) have the wp-site-blocks wrapper that block themes output in their page code.

### How do I check if my WordPress site uses a block theme?

In the WordPress admin, a block theme shows Editor under Appearance instead of Customize. You can also view your homepage source and search for wp-site-blocks.

Theme changes are where WordPress sites most often break, and planning the move on a staging copy keeps headers, footers and layouts intact. Need help with this? See our WordPress support services (https://www.pagespeedmatters.com/services/wordpress-maintenance).

How we measured

## Methodology & Source

Data source

40,295,452 homepages crawled Jan to Oct 2026

Collection date

October 2026

Sample

8,802,973 WordPress homepages

Release

PageSpeed Matters, Oct 2026

Homepages crawled 1 Jan to 14 Oct 2026 (40,295,452 domains). WordPress means the homepage code contains 'wp-content'; block-theme markup means it also contains the wp-site-blocks wrapper that block themes output. The search covers the full page source, including hidden templates and scripts, so results are reported as markup in the page code. The count could not be confirmed in a second dataset, and we do not report breakdowns or trends.
