## Summary

Every Shopify store runs on a theme, and the theme sets most of what a shopper sees: the layout, the product page, the cart. We wanted to know which themes stores actually use, and whether the stores that rank in Google pick different themes from Shopify as a whole.

Dawn is the clear leader. It runs on 18.1% of 813,530 Shopify homepages (147,406 stores), and the 15 most common named themes together cover 50.8% of stores. Among Shopify stores that rank in Google's top 20, Dawn still leads, but paid themes show up about twice as often as they do across all of Shopify.

## What we measured

Shopify writes the theme's schema name into the page code of every store. We counted each theme by an exact match on that name across 40.3 million homepages crawled between January and October 2026. The denominator is every homepage that contains "Shopify.theme": 813,530 stores.

For ranking stores, we took the sites in Google's top 20 for 10,019 US searches in October 2026 and checked their homepages. That gave 5,507 Shopify stores, of which 5,125 had a detectable theme name. Each store is counted once, at its best position and in its main vertical.

Two limits apply. Stores that rename their theme are grouped under the original schema name, so a heavily customised copy of Dawn still counts as Dawn. And the position results are a correlation: a theme does not cause a ranking. This study covers adoption only and does not compare themes on speed.

## Dawn leads, and 15 themes cover half of Shopify

Across all 813,530 Shopify homepages, Dawn runs on 18.1%. Debut follows at 9.3%, Horizon at 6.1%, Prestige at 2.8% and Impulse at 2.5%. The 15 most common named themes together cover 50.8% of stores, so the other half is spread across a long tail of smaller themes.

Dawn's lead is likely about defaults: it was the theme new Shopify stores started with for several years, and stores that never switch keep it. Debut, the older default, is retired but still sits second, which suggests a large group of stores that have not changed theme in a long time.

18.1%

Share of the 813,530 Shopify homepages crawled that run the Dawn theme (147,406 stores).

## Ranking stores lean toward paid themes

Among the 5,125 Shopify stores ranking in Google's top 20 with a detectable theme, Dawn still leads at 13.2%. After that the order changes: Impulse runs 5.4% of ranking stores, Prestige 5.0%, Empire 2.9%, Horizon 2.8% and Impact 2.4%. The retired Debut theme still runs 2.2%.

The split between free and paid themes is the clearest difference. Shopify's nine free themes in the list run 41.9% of all Shopify homepages but only 20.1% of ranking stores.

Paid themes are about twice as common among ranking stores. Impulse runs 5.4% of ranking stores against 2.5% of all Shopify homepages, Prestige 5.0% against 2.8%, and Impact 2.4% against 0.9%. The table above shows the same pattern for Symmetry, Broadcast and Warehouse.

This does not mean a paid theme helps a store rank. Stores that buy a premium theme are often more established businesses with bigger catalogs and marketing budgets, and those traits may explain more of the gap than the theme itself.

## Dawn is least common at position 1

Dawn's share is lowest among stores holding the top spot. It runs 11.7% of the 803 stores whose best ranking is position 1, against 14.1% at positions 2 to 5 (1,406 stores), 13.4% at positions 6 to 10 and 13.0% at positions 11 to 20 (1,654 stores).

The differences are small, a few points at most, and they are a correlation. The stores that hold position 1 may skew toward larger brands, which are also more likely to run a paid or custom theme.

## Dawn's share varies by vertical

The vertical matters more than position. Dawn runs 9.8% of ranking apparel stores (480) and 10.0% of jewelry stores (720), against 15.8% in kitchen (385) and 16.6% in fitness (193).

Apparel and jewelry stores sell on look and brand, so they may be more likely to choose a fashion-focused paid theme or a custom build, while more kitchen and fitness stores stay on Dawn. The fitness group is the smallest here, so treat its figure with care.

## What this means for your store

A theme is a starting point, not a strategy. If your store runs on Dawn, you are in good company: it is the most common theme among all Shopify stores and among ranking ones. What separates stores is what they do on top of the theme.

- **Audit your product page first.** Whatever theme you run, check that price, reviews, delivery details and the add to cart button are visible on a phone without scrolling.
- **Be careful with apps.** App scripts added on top of any theme can slow the page. Remove apps you no longer use.
- **If you switch themes, test it.** Run the new theme on a duplicate, check your key pages in PageSpeed Insights, and compare conversion rates before and after the switch.
- **Do not pick a theme because ranking stores use it.** The gap between free and paid themes is linked to the kind of store, not proof that a theme lifts rankings.
