Summary
The national bank has the budget, the brand, and the engineering team, so it should have the faster website. It does not. Across 108 local credit unions, community banks, and advisory firms in 32 US metros, 57.4% pass Google's Core Web Vitals on mobile. In our smaller, separate set of big national banks and fintechs, only 39% pass. The local credit union's site is usually the quicker one, and the reputation runs exactly backwards.
For a financial institution, a fast site is trust made visible. People deciding where to keep their money read a page that appears instantly as a sign of a responsive, well-run operation, and a page that stalls as a sign of the opposite. Speed also drives the outcomes that matter: slow pages depress the rate-quote requests, appointment bookings, and account-open starts that a marketing site exists to capture, and Google treats loading, responsiveness, and stability as ranking signals, so a slow site is harder to find for the local searches that bring in members and clients.
These numbers come from Google's Chrome User Experience Report, the real-user field data collected from the Chrome browsers of actual visitors, the same signals Google's ranking systems use. We measured the public marketing site each institution runs, the pages a prospective customer actually sees, not the logged-in banking portal behind them.
What the data covers
The readings come from the Chrome User Experience Report, which captures loading, responsiveness, and layout stability from the browsers of real prospective members and clients opening these institutions' sites on their own phones and networks, not from a synthetic lab benchmark. The finance sample was built the way a saver actually shortlists a place for their money in Google: 108 local credit unions, community banks, and financial advisory, mortgage, CPA, and insurance firms that appear in the results for finance queries across 32 US metro areas, benchmarked against a separate flagship set of the big national banks and fintechs.
Every reading here is the public marketing site, the pages a prospective customer sees before they sign up, not the logged-in online-banking portal behind them. It is a competitive-search set by design, not a census: the local finance presence a saver actually encounters when they open Google to compare institutions in their city, rather than an inventory of every bank website on the internet.
Passing Core Web Vitals requires clearing all three of Google's thresholds simultaneously at the 75th percentile of an institution's mobile visitors: main content painted in under 2.5 seconds (good LCP), interactions responding in under 200 milliseconds (good INP), and a layout stable enough to score under 0.1 on cumulative shift (good CLS). It is a strict all-three bar, and the 75th percentile is what defines the typical visitor's experience.
The local institution is faster
Group the 108 local finance businesses together and 57.4% pass, a strong sector figure. It holds because these are content-first marketing sites: rates, products, branch locations, and a link to the online-banking login, without a heavy application loaded on the public page. Good INP runs 94.9% and good CLS 88.9%, both healthy, and the median local site paints its main content in 2.0 seconds, just inside the passing line. The fastest local institutions load in about a second: an advisory firm at 0.9 seconds, a credit union at 1.0, a mortgage firm at 1.2.
Loading is the softer metric at 74.1% good LCP, usually traceable to a single large hero image or a stock-photo carousel rather than anything structural. The slowest local sites are the ones behaving like the big banks, a wealth-management firm at 4.2 seconds and community-bank and CPA sites in the 3.5-to-3.6 range, held back by heavy templates and imagery. That is the whole failure mode for local finance, and it is a straightforward one to fix.

The megabanks are the slow ones
Set the local institutions against the big national banks and fintechs and the picture flips. In our separate national set, only 39% passed. TD Bank loaded its homepage in 6.0 seconds; Bank of America, HSBC, Capital One, Fidelity, and Vanguard all failed on loading; and the card networks posted extreme layout shift, with Visa scoring a 1.05 CLS as its page jumped during load. These are named public institutions, and their field-data numbers tell the story plainly.
The reason is not carelessness. The giants' busiest web property is a heavy, feature-dense portal, and their marketing sites carry large campaign media and deep tag stacks. The local credit union's site is lighter by nature, and lightness is what passes Core Web Vitals. The small institution wins on speed not despite its smaller budget but partly because of it: there is simply less weight on the page.

Defend the speed lead you already hold
This is a marketing advantage the data already hands local finance, and the job is to keep it. Across the 108 sites, 57.4% pass on mobile against 39% for the big national banks, and the two hard metrics are close to finished: responsiveness is good on 94.9% of sites and stability on 88.9%. A prospective member choosing between a nearby credit union and a national brand meets a page that already loads and responds like a well-run institution.
If your site sits in the failing 43%, it is almost always a loading problem, because good LCP runs at just 74.1% while the other two clear 88%. The slowest local sites prove the point: a wealth-management firm at 4.2 seconds and community-bank and CPA sites at 3.5 to 3.6 seconds, held back by heavy templates and a large hero or stock-photo carousel that loads up top. The repair is the standard one: compress and correctly size the hero image and move to faster hosting with caching.
The megabanks show what heavier pages cost, with TD Bank loading in 6.0 seconds and Visa posting a 1.05 layout-shift score. Local finance wins here because its pages are lighter, and a little loading hygiene is all it takes to keep the median at 2.0 seconds and stay the faster site in town.
