Summary
An embedded Google map depends on a working key and a Google Cloud project with billing turned on. If either breaks, the map can fail to load properly.
We revisited pages that initialise a Google map and read the browser console. Of 302 pages that loaded the Google Maps JavaScript API in October 2026, 2.6% (8) logged an error that stops the map loading properly, and another 4.0% (12) logged key or version warnings. This is a small sample, so treat these rates as a floor.
What we measured
We started from pages in the HTTP Archive September 2026 crawl. Of 34,844 pages that load the Google Maps script, 469 initialised a map during the crawl. We visited those 469 pages once in October 2026 in a desktop browser, read the Google Maps errors and warnings in the browser console, and checked rendered maps for Google's error overlay. 302 of them loaded the Google Maps script on our visit.
A blocking error is a Google Maps console error that stops the map loading properly. A warning is a console warning about the key or script version that does not stop the map on its own.
The limits are real. This is one visit per page on desktop. Only 63 of the 469 pages finished loading within 15 seconds, and some third-party content did not load during the visit, so errors that appear late are likely undercounted.
Billing and key problems cause the blocking errors
8 of the 302 pages (2.6%) logged a blocking Google Maps error. Billing not enabled was the most common cause (3 pages), followed by an invalid key (2), a deleted project (2) and a project error (1). Each is an account or setup problem rather than a code bug.
Another 12 pages (4.0%) logged only warnings. The most common were a missing key (6 pages) and an unneeded sensor parameter (5), both likely signs of an older embed that has not been updated.
Homepages and inner pages fail at the same rate: 2.7% of 148 homepages and 2.6% of 154 inner pages logged a blocking error. None of the 22 maps that rendered during our visit showed Google's visible error box.
2.6%
Share of 302 pages loading the Google Maps JavaScript API on our October 2026 visit that logged an error that stops the map loading properly.
Most embedded maps wait before they load
Of the 34,844 pages in the HTTP Archive crawl that load the Google Maps script, only 469 (1.3%) initialised a map during the crawl. Most embedded maps wait for a click, scroll or consent before they start, which also means a broken key may not show up until a visitor tries to use the map.
1,104 of those 34,844 pages (3.2%) load the script with neither a key nor a client ID in its URL. The rate is the same on homepages (565 of 17,687) and inner pages (539 of 17,157).
What this means for your site
Open the page with your map, open the browser console and interact with the map so it fully loads. Look for any message that starts with Google Maps JavaScript API.
- If you see a billing error, check the Google Cloud project behind the key has billing enabled and a valid payment method.
- If the key is invalid, missing or tied to a deleted project, create or restore a key and restrict it to your domain.
- Remove old parameters such as sensor from the script URL.
Then add the map page to your regular maintenance checks.

Frequently asked questions
How common are Google Maps errors on websites?
Of 302 pages that loaded the Google Maps JavaScript API on our visit, 2.6% (8) logged an error that stops the map loading properly and 4.0% (12) logged key or version warnings. The sample is small, so treat these as a floor.
What causes a Google map to stop loading?
In our sample, the blocking errors were billing not enabled (3 pages), an invalid key (2), a deleted project (2) and a project error (1).
How do I check my Google Maps embed for errors?
Open the map page, open the browser console and interact with the map so it loads. Any message starting with Google Maps JavaScript API points to a key, billing or version problem.
Map errors usually come from an account setting rather than the site itself, so a quick check after any billing or key change keeps them from going unnoticed. Need help with this? See our website maintenance services.
