    Summary

On a phone, the first screen is all a shopper sees before deciding whether to scroll. A hero image or a product photo can fill it, but a few words of text usually do the work of saying what the page is and why it matters. We checked how much text ranking store pages actually show there.

Most show some, and a minority show almost none. 10.1% of 483 ranking store pages rendered on a phone show fewer than 10 words on the first screen, and the median first screen has 34 words outside the header and navigation. Store homepages are the sparsest, and pages on Shopify are less likely to open on an almost empty screen.

    What we measured

We loaded store homepages, category pages and product pages that rank in Google results in commercial verticals, at phone size, in October 2026. This is a modest sample, so the results describe store pages and should not be read as true of all ranking pages.

For each page we counted the visible words on the first phone screen (390x844 pixels). Header and navigation elements are excluded, and so are fixed overlays such as cookie banners and chat buttons. A page shows "almost none" when fewer than 10 visible words remain. The word count was recorded for only part of the store pages we rendered, which is why this base is smaller than the full set.

One in ten store pages shows almost no text

10.1% of the 483 ranking store pages we rendered show fewer than 10 words on the first phone screen, once header and navigation are excluded. On those pages the first screen is likely a large image, a slider or a product photo with little or no text beside it.

The typical page carries more. The median first phone screen has 34 words outside the header and navigation, or 52 if header text is counted. That is roughly a headline and a sentence or two, enough to say what the page offers.

Store homepages are the sparsest page type

Store homepages show the least text on the first screen, with a median of 27.0 words and 9.2% under 10 words across 152 pages. A likely reason is the full-width hero banner: when its text is part of the image, it does not count as visible words.

Product pages show a median of 32 words, but they are the most likely to open almost empty: 13.7% of 175 have fewer than 10. On a phone, the product photo often fills most of the first screen, which can push the title and price below it.

Category pages carry the most first-screen text, a median of 44.5 words across 156 pages. Category titles, short intros, filter labels and the first product names all add words near the top.

Shopify pages are less likely to open almost empty

Shopify pages are less likely to show an almost empty first screen. 7.1% of 339 Shopify pages have fewer than 10 words, against 18.3% of 131 pages on other platforms. Shared theme layouts likely explain part of the gap, since many Shopify themes follow similar mobile patterns.

By vertical, the share ranges from 7.1% for pets and baby and 7.7% for outdoor and fitness up to 16.5% for beauty and health. Pages ranking #1 to #3 have the lowest share at 6.2%, against 12.3% at #4 to #10 and 10.7% at #11 to #20. That does not show that first-screen text helps a page rank, and the groups are small.

What this means for your store

Check your key templates on a real phone, not a desktop browser window. If the first screen is only an image, add a short line of real text that says what the page is: the collection name and a one-line pitch on a homepage, or the product name and price on a product page.

    • Put text in HTML, not inside banner images, so it is readable by shoppers and search engines.
    • Reduce the height of hero banners and sliders on mobile so the first line of content shows without scrolling.
    • Keep cookie banners and pop-ups small, since they cover the space your text needs.
    • Make sure the main text is part of the first render, so it does not wait on scripts to appear.
