Summary
FAQPage markup used to be one of the easiest ways to take up more space in Google results. In 2023 Google limited FAQ rich results to well-known government and health sites, and it retired HowTo rich results. For almost every other site, the markup stopped earning anything visible in search.
We checked how much of it is still out there. FAQPage markup is on 40,403 of 1,401,418 pages in the top-1M crawl (2.9%), including 22,689 homepages. Very little of it sits on the government and health sites that can still earn the rich result.
What we measured
We used the HTTP Archive crawl of the top 1M sites by Chrome traffic from September 2026, on mobile. It covers 1,401,418 home and inner pages.
For each page we read the rendered structured data types, from both JSON-LD and microdata. A page counts when a type name is exactly FAQPage or HowTo, so sub-types such as HowToStep are not counted. We treated a page as a government or health site when the same page also carries a MedicalOrganization, Hospital, Physician, MedicalClinic or GovernmentOrganization type. Platform comes from HTTP Archive's technology detection.
This is a single month with no trend line, so it shows how much markup exists now, not whether usage is rising or falling.
FAQ markup is still on 2.9% of pages
Of 1,401,418 top-1M home and inner pages, 40,403 carry FAQPage markup, or 2.9%. 22,689 of those are homepages.
HowTo markup, which Google retired in 2023, is still on 2,098 pages, 1,081 of them homepages. That is far less common than FAQPage, but it no longer earns a rich result for anyone.
Usage is flat across popularity and page type. 2.6% of 1,410 Top 1K pages carry FAQPage markup, against 3.1% of 120,761 pages ranked 10,001 to 100,000 and 2.9% of lower-ranked pages. Homepages and inner pages both sit at 2.9%.

Almost none of it can earn the rich result
Very few FAQPage pages belong to the sites Google still shows FAQ rich results for. Only 431 of the 40,403 (1.1%) also carry a medical, hospital, physician or government organization type. Our test is a type on the same page, not proof of who runs the site, but the gap is wide enough to suggest that nearly all FAQ markup sits on sites outside the eligible group.
A large share of it is on stores. 16.3% of FAQPage pages (6,601) also carry Product markup, so a good part of the leftover FAQ schema sits on ecommerce product and category pages. Markup like this usually lives in a theme or app template, so it likely stays in place whether or not anyone still expects a rich result from it.
Webflow sites use FAQ markup most
Webflow sites lead by a wide margin. 8.7% of 4,842 Webflow pages carry FAQPage markup, against 4.4% of 93,507 Shopify pages, 2.9% of 221,782 WordPress pages, 2.8% of 1,718 Wix pages and 1.9% of 998 Squarespace pages. Other or custom pages sit at 2.7% of 1,078,571.
Webflow sites are often marketing sites with an FAQ block near the bottom of the page, and that pattern likely explains the higher rate. Shopify's 4.4% fits the product page pattern above.
Most of this markup is JSON-LD. Only 10.4% of FAQPage pages (4,198) use microdata, which fits FAQ schema added as a script block by a theme, app or plugin rather than written into the page HTML.
What this means for your site
FAQ markup is not harmful. It just no longer earns rich results for most sites, so it should not be the reason you add an FAQ section.
- If your site is not a well-known government or health site, do not expect FAQ rich results from FAQPage markup. Keep the FAQ content if it helps visitors, and keep the markup only if it is accurate and matches what is on the page.
- Remove HowTo markup when you next edit those templates. It earns nothing in Google results.
- Check product templates in particular. If an app or theme adds FAQPage markup to every product page, make sure it describes questions actually shown on that page.
- Spend structured data effort where rich results still appear for your type of page, such as Product, Review snippets on products, Breadcrumb and Article markup.
- Validate any markup you keep with Google's Rich Results Test or the Schema Markup Validator.

Frequently asked questions
Does FAQ schema still work in 2026?
For most sites, no. Google limited FAQ rich results to government and health sites in 2023. In our crawl, only 431 of the 40,403 pages with FAQPage markup (1.1%) also carry a medical, hospital, physician or government organization type.
How many websites still use FAQ schema?
FAQPage markup is on 40,403 of 1,401,418 pages in the September 2026 top-1M crawl (2.9%), including 22,689 homepages. Webflow sites use it most, on 8.7% of pages.
Should I remove FAQ schema from my site?
There is no need to rush. FAQ markup is not harmful, it just no longer earns rich results for most sites. Keep it only if it is accurate, and remove HowTo markup, which Google retired in 2023 and is still on 2,098 pages in our crawl.
Is HowTo schema still used?
Yes, on a small scale. HowTo markup is still on 2,098 top-1M pages, 1,081 of them homepages, or 0.15% of all pages in the crawl.
Structured data only pays off where it can still earn a rich result, so it is worth putting the effort into the types that do. Need help with this? See our on-page SEO services.
