    3. Only 7.1% of WooCommerce stores (1,572 of 21,999) run 0 to 2 detectable plugins, against 51.9% of non-store WordPress homepages (47,705 of 91,805).

    4. 1,003 stores run 9 or more plugins. Among stores with CrUX data, the Core Web Vitals pass rate falls from 53.8% at 0 to 2 plugins (1,443) to 39.3% at 3 to 5 (11,484), 28.7% at 6 to 8 (6,705) and 20.9% at 9 or more (934).

    Summary

A WooCommerce store needs more moving parts than a brochure site: payments, shipping, product filters, reviews and marketing tools, and each one usually arrives as a plugin. We counted how many plugins popular WooCommerce stores run and how plugin count lines up with field speed.

The median top 1M WooCommerce store runs 5 detectable plugins, against 3 for WordPress homepages overall. Stores with 9 or more pass Core Web Vitals only 20.9% of the time, against 53.8% for stores with 0 to 2.

    What we measured

We looked at HTTP Archive's Sept 2026 mobile crawl of the top 1M sites by Chrome traffic. A store is a WordPress homepage where WooCommerce is detected, which gives 21,999 store homepages. We compared them with 113,804 WordPress homepages overall and 91,805 non-store WordPress homepages.

Plugin count is the number of distinct WordPress plugins detected on the homepage, with WooCommerce itself counted as one. Plugins that leave no trace on the homepage are not counted, so real totals are likely higher.

Pass rates and LCP rates use stores with Chrome UX Report field data at the 75th percentile. The pass-rate curve is a correlation: bigger stores also tend to run more plugins, so plugin count is not the only thing that differs between groups.

Stores run more plugins than other WordPress sites

The median WooCommerce store runs 5 detectable plugins, against 3 for WordPress homepages overall. A quarter of stores run 6 or more (the 75th percentile is 6), against 4 for WordPress homepages overall.

Lean stores are rare. Only 7.1% of WooCommerce stores (1,572 of 21,999) run 0 to 2 detectable plugins, against 51.9% of non-store WordPress homepages (47,705 of 91,805). Most stores sit in the 3 to 5 band, and almost a third run 6 to 8.

That is what you would expect. A store needs features a brochure site does not, and in WordPress most features come from plugins.

Pass rates fall as plugin counts rise

1,003 stores run 9 or more detectable plugins. Among stores with CrUX data, the Core Web Vitals pass rate falls at every step:

    • 53.8% at 0 to 2 plugins (1,443 stores)
    • 39.3% at 3 to 5 (11,484)
    • 28.7% at 6 to 8 (6,705)
    • 20.9% at 9 or more (934)

LCP pass rates follow the same line, from 61.1% at 0 to 2 plugins to 27.5% at 9 or more. This is a correlation. Bigger stores also tend to run more plugins, and the other ways big stores differ, such as catalog size and marketing tags, likely play a part too.

    Plugin-heavy stores ship more code

More plugins go with more JavaScript. The median store with 0 to 2 plugins ships 729 KB of JavaScript, against 1,377 KB for stores with 9 or more. Median requests rise from 100 to 191.

Many WooCommerce plugins load their scripts and styles on every page, not only where they are used. A reviews widget or a product filter can add code to the homepage even when it shows nothing there, which is one likely reason page weight climbs with each install.

Stores trail other WordPress sites overall

Overall, 36.0% of 20,566 WooCommerce stores with CrUX data pass Core Web Vitals, against 52.4% of 79,545 non-store WordPress homepages.

Stores carry more plugins, but they also carry product images, carts, tracking and checkout logic that a brochure site does not. The gap reflects all of that together, not plugin count alone.

What this means for your store

You cannot run a store on zero plugins, but you can keep the count deliberate and stop each one from loading where it is not needed.

    • List every active plugin and note what it does. Remove anything you no longer use, and replace overlapping plugins with one.
    • Use a tool such as Query Monitor on a staging copy to see which plugins add scripts and database queries to each page.
    • Stop plugin scripts from loading on pages that do not use them, for example review or filter scripts on the homepage and blog.
    • Test product and category pages in PageSpeed Insights before and after each change, and check your Core Web Vitals report in Search Console over the following weeks.

    Frequently asked questions

How many plugins does the average WooCommerce store use?

The median top 1M WooCommerce store runs 5 detectable plugins, and a quarter run 6 or more. WordPress homepages overall have a median of 3 and a 75th percentile of 4.

Do more plugins slow down a WooCommerce store?

Stores with more plugins pass Core Web Vitals less often: 53.8% at 0 to 2 plugins, 39.3% at 3 to 5, 28.7% at 6 to 8 and 20.9% at 9 or more. That is a correlation, since bigger stores also run more plugins.

How do I find out which plugins slow down my store?

Use a tool such as Query Monitor on a staging copy to see which plugins add scripts and queries to each page, then disable plugins one at a time and test in PageSpeed Insights.

Plugin bloat builds up one install at a time, and a regular audit keeps a store's code in line with the features it actually uses. Need help with this? See our WooCommerce maintenance service.
