Summary
WooCommerce ships new releases often, and each one carries bug fixes, compatibility work and, at times, security patches. A store that falls behind takes on more risk with every release it skips, and the eventual update gets harder.
We checked which WooCommerce version the top 1M stores run. Of 17,311 stores exposing a version, 64.4% run one of the three newest releases (11.1, 11.0 or 10.9). The other 35.6%, 6,155 stores, run an older release, and 13.9% are still on 9.x or earlier.
What we measured
We looked at the HTTP Archive crawl of September 2026 (mobile, top 1M sites by Chrome traffic) and read the WooCommerce version on each store's homepage.
A store exposes its version when the WooCommerce version number appears in the URLs of its homepage files. 78.7% of the 21,999 top 1M WooCommerce homepages expose a WooCommerce version, which gives us 17,311 stores. Stores that hide the version are excluded, so the results describe stores that expose it.
We call a store current when it runs 11.1, 11.0 or 10.9, and behind when it runs anything older (three or more releases behind). Core Web Vitals pass rates come from Chrome UX Report field data for the stores that have it. Only homepages are covered.
Most stores run one of the three newest releases
64.4% of the 17,311 stores run 11.1, 11.0 or 10.9. The newest release, 11.1, is the single biggest group at 32.9%, followed by 11.0 at 22.9% and 10.9 at 8.7%.
That leaves 35.6% (6,155 stores) three or more releases behind. The gap splits into two groups. 21.6% of version-exposing stores (3,743) sit on 10.0 to 10.8, a few releases back. Another 13.9% (2,412) are still on 9.x or earlier, at least two major versions behind.
The first group likely includes stores that update now and then but not on every release. The second more likely includes stores that have stopped updating, sometimes because an old theme or custom plugin makes the update risky.

Share of 17,311 version-exposing top 1M WooCommerce stores running a release older than 10.9.
Plugin updates lag core updates
Of 12,023 stores that expose both their WordPress and WooCommerce versions, 63.1% (7,582) are current on both. 14.6% (1,759) are behind on both.
The WooCommerce currency rate in this study sits well below the core rate our WordPress version study found for WooCommerce stores, so stores more often fall behind on the plugin than on WordPress itself. A likely reason is risk: a WooCommerce update touches templates, payment plugins and checkout, so store owners tend to put it off.
Stores with the fewest detectable plugins are the least current. 58.5% of 1,132 stores with 0 to 2 plugins run one of the three newest WooCommerce releases, against 65.2% of 9,494 stores with 3 to 5. A very lean plugin list may point to an older or simpler store that gets less regular attention, while stores with a few more plugins are likely managed more actively.
Stores behind on updates pass Core Web Vitals slightly less often
Among stores with Chrome UX Report data, 33.5% of 5,723 stores behind on WooCommerce pass Core Web Vitals, against 36.0% of 10,484 current stores. The gap is small, and it is a correlation: stores that skip updates may also skip other upkeep, such as image and script cleanup.
The table breaks this down by popularity. In the top 100K, the gap looks wider (37.3% for current stores against 25.0% for those behind), but that tier has only 221 version-exposing stores, so treat it with care. Across the rest of the top 1M, the figures closely match the overall result.
What this means for your store
Check your version first. In the WordPress admin, the Plugins page shows the WooCommerce version you run; compare it with the latest release.
- If you are a few releases behind, update on a staging copy, test checkout and payments, then update the live store.
- If you are on 9.x or earlier, plan the update as a project. Check your theme's WooCommerce templates and any custom or payment plugins for compatibility before you start.
- Update WordPress core and WooCommerce on the same schedule, so one does not drift behind the other.
- After each update, re-check your Core Web Vitals, so you know whether a release changed how your store loads.
