Summary
A cart drawer is the panel that slides in from the side of the screen when a shopper taps Add to Cart, instead of sending them to a separate cart page. It keeps people on the product they were looking at, and many Shopify themes now offer it as a setting.
We wanted to know how standard it has become among stores that already win in search. The answer: 69.4% of 5,509 Shopify stores ranking in Google's top 20 have a slide-out cart drawer in their homepage code.
What we measured
We started from the Shopify stores ranking in Google's top 20 for 10,019 US searches and checked each store's homepage HTML in October 2026. That gave 5,509 Shopify homepages.
A store counts as having a cart drawer when its homepage HTML contains common cart drawer markup or the markup of a cart drawer app. We grouped stores by theme type, by the search vertical they rank for most often, by search type, by best ranking position and by whether they use hreflang tags.
Detection comes from markup, so a drawer built with unusual markup can be missed. We did not run a speed comparison, so this study says nothing about whether drawers make stores faster or slower. Differences by rank are correlations.
Nearly seven in ten ranking Shopify stores use a cart drawer
69.4% of the 5,509 Shopify store homepages ranking in Google's top 20 match slide-out cart drawer markup. That makes the drawer the normal choice among ranking stores rather than the exception.
The remaining stores likely send shoppers to a full cart page or show a small popup notice, and some may use a drawer our patterns did not catch.
69.4%
Share of 5,509 Shopify stores ranking in Google's top 20 whose homepage code includes a slide-out cart drawer.
Theme choice tracks drawer use
Stores on a paid or custom theme are the most likely to have a drawer: 74.8% of 4,177 do. Stores on one of Shopify's free themes are lower, at 63.6% of 951.
A likely reason is theme defaults: paid and custom themes may more often switch a drawer on out of the box, while free themes offer it as one of several cart styles. Stores where the theme name is not exposed in the code sit far lower, at 24.7% of 381. That group likely includes headless and heavily customized builds that handle the cart in their own way, which our markup patterns may not detect.
Fashion and fitness stores lead, service sites trail
The vertical a store ranks in makes a clear difference. Fitness stores lead at 75.7% of 206, followed by apparel at 75.0% of 519. Outdoor (74.7%) and beauty (73.7%) stores are close behind, while DIY stores sit lower at 62.8%.
Two groups trail. Home services sites on Shopify use a drawer on 51.3% of 150 homepages, and gaming sites on 49.5% of 97. Both are likely less focused on a catalog of physical products that shoppers add one by one.
The same split shows up by search type. Shopify sites ranking for local and professional service searches use drawers least, at 58.3% of 271, against 70.5% of 4,355 stores ranking for product searches. Where people come to browse and add several items, a drawer that keeps them on the page is more common.
Rank and reach show smaller differences
Stores that hold a #1 result use a drawer slightly more often: 72.5% of 866, against 68.9% of 1,763 stores whose best rank is 11 to 20. Stores with a best rank of 2 to 5 and 6 to 10 sit in between, at 68.5% and 69.1%. The pattern is mild, and it is a correlation. One possible reason is that stores holding the top spot are more often larger brands on paid themes, which use drawers more, but we did not test that.
International stores use drawers a little more often too. 73.0% of 1,398 stores with hreflang tags have a drawer, against 68.2% of 4,111 single-market stores. Multi-market stores may be larger operations with more invested in their theme, which could explain part of that gap.
What this means for your store
A cart drawer is now the default among ranking Shopify stores, but being common is not proof it is right for every store. Treat it as a choice to test.
- If you sell products people buy several of at once, such as clothing or fitness gear, a drawer that keeps shoppers on the page is worth testing against a full cart page.
- If you sell services or single big-ticket items, a direct path to checkout may suit your shoppers better.
- Make the drawer useful: show the item added, the subtotal, a clear checkout button and an easy way to keep shopping.
- Check that it closes with the back button and the Escape key, and that screen readers announce it.
- Run an A/B test and watch checkout starts and completed orders, not just add-to-cart clicks.
