    Key Findings

    1. On 152 ranking product pages rendered at 390x844, Add to Cart starts below the first screen 82.2% of the time; counting a button as above the fold only when fully visible raises that to 88.2%.

    2. The median buy button starts 1,081 px down the page, and 10.5% of buttons sit more than two screens down.

    3. By platform, the share with the button below the first screen ranges from 81.4% on Shopify (113 pages) to 84.8% on other platforms (33 pages), with median positions of 1,051.5 px and 1,148.5 px.

    4. By rank, the share below the first screen ranges from 78.9% for pages ranking 11 to 20 (71 pages) to 84.6% for pages ranking 4 to 10 (52 pages).

    5. 19 more product pages showed only a sticky buy bar, which is not counted as above the fold.

    Summary

Most store traffic arrives on a phone, and the Add to Cart button is the one control a product page exists to get tapped. We wanted to know how often shoppers can see that button without scrolling.

Usually they cannot. On 152 ranking product pages with a detectable buy button, rendered on a phone-sized screen, Add to Cart starts below the first screen 82.2% of the time. The median button starts 1,081 px down the page.

    What we measured

We loaded product pages that rank in Google on a phone-sized 390x844 screen. After each page loaded, we found the first visible Add to cart, Add to bag, Add to basket or Buy now control outside the header and footer and recorded where its top edge sat.

A button counts as below the fold when it starts below the first 844 px screen. Sticky buy bars that appear on scroll are not counted as above the fold, and pages that showed only a sticky bar are left out of the 152.

This is a short study of 152 pages, so treat the platform and rank splits as directional.

Most buy buttons sit below the first screen

On 82.2% of the 152 product pages, Add to Cart starts below the first phone screen. If a button only counts as above the fold when it is fully visible, the share rises to 88.2%.

The median buy button starts 1,081 px down the page, already past the bottom of an 844 px screen. 10.5% of buttons sit more than two screens down. On a typical product page the shopper first scrolls past the gallery, title, price and options before reaching the button, which is likely why so few appear on the first screen.

Another 19 product pages showed only a sticky buy bar. Those pages keep a buy action in view, but we do not count them as above the fold.

Platform and rank barely change the picture

By platform, the share with the button below the first screen ranges from 81.4% on Shopify (113 pages) to 84.8% on other platforms (33 pages). The median button sits at 1,051.5 px on Shopify and 1,148.5 px elsewhere.

By rank, the share ranges from 78.9% for pages ranking 11 to 20 (71 pages) to 84.6% for pages ranking 4 to 10 (52 pages). With groups this small, read these gaps as directional. They do not show that button position goes with ranking. Beauty and health pages (85.7% of 35) and home, kitchen and garden pages (79.5% of 44) sit close to the overall figure too.

What this means for your store

If your buy button starts below the first screen, you are in the majority, but that does not mean shoppers find it easily. Open your best-selling product page on a phone and check what is visible before the first scroll.

    • Keep the image gallery compact on mobile so the title, price and button move up.
    • Move long descriptions, size guides and reviews below the button.
    • If the layout cannot change, add a sticky Add to Cart bar that appears once the main button scrolls out of view, and make sure it does not cover content or shift the layout.

Not often. On 152 ranking product pages rendered at 390x844, Add to Cart started below the first screen 82.2% of the time, and 88.2% of the time if the button had to be fully visible to count.

How far down a mobile product page is the Add to Cart button?

The median buy button starts 1,081 px down the page, below the bottom of an 844 px phone screen. 10.5% of buttons sit more than two screens down.

Do Shopify stores put Add to Cart higher on mobile?

Only slightly. 81.4% of 113 Shopify product pages had the button below the first screen, against 84.8% of 33 pages on other platforms.

Moving the buy button up, or adding a well-built sticky bar, is a layout change most stores can make without a redesign. Need help with this? See our ecommerce CRO agency.
