    Summary

Shoppers who search on a store often know what they want, which makes the search box one of the most useful tools on a mobile homepage. On a small screen, though, stores have to choose: show a full search box, or fold it into a magnifying glass icon to save space.

Most choose the icon. On a phone screen, 55.7% of 246 ranking store homepages hide search behind an icon, 32.1% show a visible search box and 4.9% have no search at all.

    What we measured

We rendered store homepages that rank in Google for searches in commercial verticals, on a phone-sized 390x844 screen. 246 homepages loaded with usable content. On the first screen of each, we looked for a visible search input and for a search icon or button.

This is a short study. The sample is 246 homepages, and the other-platform group is only 30 of them, so the platform split is indicative. The rank differences are a correlation, not evidence that search design affects rankings.

Most stores hide search behind an icon

Of the 246 homepages, 32.1% show a visible search box on the first screen and 55.7% hide search behind an icon. 4.9% have no search input or icon at all. Another 7.3% have a search input in the HTML but nothing visible on the first screen, for example a search field inside a closed menu.

The split differs by platform, though the other-platform group is only 30 homepages. On Shopify, 59.4% of 212 homepages hide search behind an icon, against 33.3% of 30 on other platforms. Shopify homepages also show a visible search box more often: 34.0%, against 20.0% on other platforms. Many Shopify themes put a search icon in the mobile header by default, which may explain why icons dominate there.

By rank, the visible search box share ranges from 20.0% for stores ranking 1 to 3 (65 homepages) to 36.6% for stores ranking 11 to 20 (112 homepages). Among the verticals in the table, outdoor and fitness stores show a visible box most often (37.2% of 43), and apparel and jewelry stores least often (20.9% of 67).

What this means for your site

An icon is not wrong. It is the most common choice among ranking stores. But it adds a tap before a shopper can type, and some shoppers may not notice it.

    • If your catalog is large or shoppers often arrive knowing the product name, test a visible search box in the mobile header against the icon.
    • If you keep the icon, make it a clear magnifying glass with a text label or accessible name, and open the search field with the keyboard ready.
    • Check that search shows on the first screen at all: 7.3% of homepages in our sample had a search input in the HTML but nothing visible there.
    • Track search use and conversion from search in your analytics before and after any change.
